Rental Assistance

The Flint Housing Commission administers approximately 700 Section 8 Housing Choice Vouchers. These Vouchers allow a participant to live in a privately owned rental unit with the Flint Housing Commission subsidizing their rent for the difference between 30% of their income and the monthly rent charged.

Our jurisdiction includes all of Genesee County. You will pay that landlord your calculated rent and the Flint Housing Commission will pay your landlord the difference between your rent and the actual cost of the dwelling unit. The landlord is responsible for the upkeep of your dwelling unit and the site where you live as dictated in the lease agreement.

With a Voucher you may choose a unit with a monthly rent higher than the guidelines set by the Department of HUD but you must pay the difference between the monthly rent and the subsidy amount plus any utilities for which you are responsible.

Will the Housing Commission help me find a Section 8 rental unit?

You must search to locate a landlord who will accept you as a tenant (based on rental history, etc.), as well as accept your Section 8 Housing Choice Voucher.

Landlord listings are available from the receptionist located at our Administration Building at 3820 Richfield Rd., Flint, MI 48506.

How do I get on the Section 8 waiting list?

You must complete and submit an application when the waitlist is open. All up-to-date applications are kept on an active waitlist until program eligibility is determined. Applications are for the waitlist only, not for immediate assistance. This list is open approximately once every two to four years. Applications are only available immediately prior to the list’s opening.

Public notice of waitlist openings is always published here.

Waitlist CLOSED.

Until that time, you may apply online, print the application, fill it out and return it to 3820 Richfield Road, Flint, MI 48506.

Eligibility

You must meet income guidelines based on your family size in order to be eligible for the Housing Choice Voucher Program.

Also, housing assistance will not be extended to those families whose adult members have a recent criminal history related to drugs or violence, nor to families who have been removed from the program for fraudulent activity. Families with outstanding balances owed to FHC or other housing authorities must meet their obligations before being considered for the program.
